PACK RAT ART, LARIAT BASKETS

These nylon rope baskets are handmade from lariats that have been used on ranches and rodeos throughout Utah. They retain their original color, but muted with use. The black color comes from the rider adding a piece of rubber to the saddle horn to prevent the rope from slipping. Sometimes a rowel is added for decor. A rowel is the spinning wheel (called jinglebob locally) from a spur. The wood handles are mountain mahogany from a burned forest in Jackpot, Nevada. Lariat Baskets can be used to hold many things. But they also stand alone as beautiful decorative pieces.
